Trump Emphasizes Diplomacy, Vows to Block Iran’s Nuclear Ambitions
During his 2026 State of the Union speech delivered before a joint session of Congress, Trump highlighted that discussions between the two sides are currently underway. Referring to the ongoing contacts, he said, "We are in negotiations with them. They want to make a deal, but we haven't heard those secret words: 'We will never have a nuclear weapon.'”
He reiterated that diplomacy remains his preferred path but stressed there are clear limits. "My preference is to solve this problem through diplomacy. But one thing is certain: I will never allow the world's number one sponsor of terror, which they are by far, to have a nuclear weapon. Can't let that happen," he said.
The president also asserted that Iran is advancing its missile capabilities, including weapons with extended range. “They’ve already developed missiles that can threaten Europe and our bases overseas, and they’re working to build missiles that will soon reach the United States of America,” he added.
According to reports, representatives from Tehran and Washington are preparing to participate in a third round of indirect nuclear negotiations. The discussions are expected to take place in Geneva on Thursday, with mediation facilitated by Oman.
Earlier the same day, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio reportedly held a private briefing for senior American lawmakers concerning Iran, as Trump considered possible military options.
Meanwhile, Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi announced that Tehran is prepared to continue negotiations in Geneva, stating the country will resume discussions with the United States “with a determination to achieve a fair and equitable deal in the shortest possible time.”
